Best 12V, 24V, 36V, and 48V Lithium Golf Cart Batteries

Deep cycle lithium batteries offer many benefits to golf cart owners, including weight savings, a higher number of charging/discharging cycles, simplified maintenance, etc. in the end, lithium golf cart batteries even save money in the long run.

However, there are situations where lead-acid batteries are still the best way to provide zero CO2 emission energy not only to golf carts but also to other electric vehicles in general.

Intro to Golf Cart Batteries

Golf cart batteries provide energy for golf carts and similar electric vehicles.

These batteries generally differ in size, voltage and capacity - they include several BCI battery sizes, although there are some batteries offered in non-standard sizes as well:

- 6 Volt Group GC2: 10.375 x 7.1875 x 10.625 inches, 264 x 183 x 277 mm,

- 6 Volt Group GC2H: 10.375 x 7.1875 x 11.625 inches, 264 x 183 x 295 mm,

- 8 Volt Group GC8: 10.375 x 7.1875 x 10.625 inches, 264 x 183 x 277 mm,

- 8 Volt Group GC8H: 10.375 x 7.1875 x 11.625 inches, 264 x 183 x 295 mm,

- 12 Volt Group GC12: 12.875 x 7.1875 x 10.875 inches, 327 x 183 x 277 mm.

But, other battery sizes are used as well, including:

- Group U1/U1R: 7.75 x 5.1875 x 7.3125 inches, 197 x 132 x 186 mm,

- Group 31: 13 x 6.8125 x 9.4375 inches, 330 x 173 x 240 mm,

- Group 4D: 20.75 x 8.75 x 9.875 inches, 527 x 222 x 250 mm,

- Group 6D: 20.75 x 10 x 10.25 inches, 527 x 254 x 260 mm,

- Group 8D: 20.75 x 11.125 x 9.875 inches, 527 x 283 x 250 mm.

Most golf carts feature battery packs that range 36 or 48 volts, although there are models that come with 56, 60, or even 72 volts with intention of increasing voltage even further.

But, most models still feature 36V and 48V battery packs.

In order to achieve the required capacity and voltage, batteries are connected in parallel and series, which was never a problem for the lead-acid batteries.

The following chart lists number of required batteries connected in series in order to achieve a certain voltage:

Battery Pack Voltage / Individual Battery Voltage 6V 8V 12V 24V 36V 48V
24V 4 3 2 1 - -
36V 6 - 3 - 1 -
48V 8 6 4 2 - 1
56V - 7 - - - -
60V 10 - 5 - - -
72V 12 9 6 3 2 -

So, if You need a 48V battery pack, You can achieve it by connecting eight 6V batteries in series, or six 8V, or four 12V, or two 24V, or You can simply take one 48V battery if it has large enough capacity.

Golf carts usually feature battery compartments that allow several battery combinations in order to achieve a certain capacity and voltage, but one is also limited by the available cables, battery charger, and similar.

When replacing old golf cart batteries with new ones, a new battery pack should be as good or better than the old battery pack in terms of capacity, energy stored, maximum discharge current, charging conditions, and similar.

For a long time, golf cart batteries have been powered by lead-acid batteries. However, in recent times, deep cycle lithium batteries are becoming more and more popular, thanks to their charging/discharging features and the weight savings they offer.

Lithium Batteries vs. Lead-Acid Batteries

The pros and cons of deep cycle lithium batteries over lead-acid batteries are numerous, and here are the most important ones:

- Spill-Proof Batteries: wet/flooded lead-acid batteries must operate in the upside position, or their electrolyte (diluted sulfuric acid) may be spilled. AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) and Gel-cell lead-acid batteries are spill-proof lead-acid batteries and can operate while placed on their sides, but they can't operate upside down.

Lithium batteries on the other hand are true spill-proof batteries and can operate in any position.

- Cell Voltage: lead-acid batteries have a nominal voltage of 2V and can be used to create 6V, 8V, 12V, 24V, 36V, 48V batteries.

Lithium batteries feature several lithium chemistries with the Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) being the most common - LiFePO4 chemistry features 3.2V cell voltage and is suitable for making 6V (6.4V), 12V (12.8V), 24V (25.6V), 36V (38.4V), 48V (51.2V), etc. battery packs.

- Capacity: while lithium batteries feature similar capacity like lead-acid batteries in terms of volume, lithium batteries are for the same capacity ~1/3 lighter. And since they don't suffer from the capacity loss when being discharged with strong currents, lithium batteries, in the end, can be up to 4-5x lighter than the lead-acid batteries.

- Charging Currents: lithium batteries can be recharged much faster than lead-acid batteries - most lithium batteries can be fully recharged in 1-5 hours (model dependent), while lead-acid batteries require 6-12 hours.

- Discharging Currents: if required, even deep cycle lead-acid batteries are able to provide strong currents thanks to their low internal resistance. On the other hand, although lithium batteries also feature low internal resistance, for safety reasons their discharge currents are usually limited to ~1C continuously and to ~1.5-2C for a short period of time (a few seconds, for example).

- Charging/Discharging Cycles: lead-acid batteries may support on average 180-300 charging/discharging cycles down to 100% DoD, while most lithium batteries support easily 2000+ charging/discharging cycles down to 100% DoD. On average, lithium batteries are able to withstand 8-10 more charging cycles than lead-acid batteries.

- Output Voltage: the voltage of lead-acid batteries drops significantly during the discharge cycle. For example, 12V lead-acid batteries feature actual voltage between ~13.8V (battery fully charged) and 10.5 volts (battery fully discharged).

Lithium batteries feature much stable output voltage with the actual voltage being in the 12-12.8V range for almost 90-95% of their discharge cycle, leading to also much better energy efficiency, when compared with the lead-acid batteries.

renogy 48v 50ah

- Price: lead-acid batteries are initially cheaper, but in the long run, thanks to a large number of supported charging/discharging cycles, lithium batteries are cheaper and they actually save money.

- Self-Discharge Rate: when being stored at room temperature, lead-acid batteries must be recharged every 3-4 months in order to avoid issues with the battery. Modern lithium batteries feature a self-discharge rate of less than 3% per month, and they often don't have to be recharged up to 6-12 months.

- Safety Issues: lead-acid batteries are very safe battery chemistry, while lithium batteries must be constantly monitored with the internal or external Battery Management System (BMS) which constantly monitors the battery parameters, including voltage, currents, temperature, and similar and if required, protects the battery from unwanted events.

Also, one of the tasks of the good BMS is to equalize the battery cells.

- Parallel/Series Connections: as long as the lead-acid batteries are of the same age and the same model, they can be freely connected in series and/or parallel.

Lithium batteries may be connected in series and/or parallel only if are allowed by their manufacturer, again, using the same battery models of the same age. If connections in series and/or parallel are allowed, it is usually up to 4 batteries in series and up to 4 batteries in parallel - in any case, it is essential to follow the manufacturer's recommendations since different batteries feature different Battery Management Systems (BMSs).

- Battery Brands: while the most popular deep cycle lead-acid battery brands are Trojan, Mighty Max, UGP, Expert Power, Renogy, etc. the most popular deep cycle lithium golf cart battery brands are Ampere Time, Battle Born, Renogy, Zooms, Lossigy, etc.

But, before picking "the best" battery for your own needs and preferences, check if these batteries actually fit your requirements.

- Charging: lithium batteries are very sensitive to charging conditions and they should be charged only with the battery chargers intended for lithium batteries.

- Other Uses of Lithium Deep Cycle Batteries: Deep cycle lithium batteries are commonly used not only as golf cart or electric vehicle batteries but also as trolling motor batteries, off-the-grid batteries, RV house batteries, wheelchair batteries, power inverter batteries, etc.

Deep cycle lithium batteries are becoming more and more common in applications where lightweight batteries that cycle well and support a large number of charging/discharging cycles are required.

6V and 8V Lithium Golf Cart Batteries

6V and 8V lead-acid batteries are available as GC2, GC2H, GC8, and GC8H lead-acid batteries.

Since Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries feature 3.2V cell voltage, having two cell batteries with 6.4V nominal voltage is theoretically possible.

But, having 8V lithium batteries is not possible - lithium batteries can have either 6.4V (two cells connected in series) or 9.6V (three cells connected in series).

In order to transfer as much energy as possible with maximum efficiency, higher voltages are preferred.

Thus, most manufacturers offer 12V (actually 12.8V) lithium batteries or lithium batteries with even higher voltages in various sizes, including BCI GC2 battery size, but having 12V or higher voltage.

Also, we have tried to verify every single bit of information in this chart, but things may change over time, especially with the introduction of new battery (sub)models.

12V lithium batteries are the most numerous class of deep-cycle high-capacity lithium batteries, suitable for use in golf carts and other electric vehicles.

The actual size of 12V lithium golf cart batteries depends on their capacity:

- 12V 100Ah batteries are mostly built as BCI Group 31 batteries,

- 12V 200-400Ah batteries are mostly built as BCI Group 4D batteries - note that these batteries are often labeled as belonging to BCI 4D group, but they are actually a little bit wider and hence they belong to the BCI 6D group. That is the reason why we label the size of those batteries as "4D (6D)".

Some of the 12V lithium batteries are built in non-standard sizes and if You are planning on using them, check the size of your battery compartment and the actual size of the battery that You plan on using.

ampere time 12v 300ah

For example, if one needs a high capacity 24V battery pack, using 8 (eight) Ampere Time 12V 300Ah batteries in 2S4P (two in series, 4 in parallel) configuration can create a 24V (actually 25.6V) battery pack, featuring 1200Ah capacity.

Such battery pack is able to provide 800 Amps continuously, 1600 Amps for 5 seconds and it weighs only 276 pounds (~125 kg).

A lead-acid battery pack that is able to provide 20480 watts for almost an hour would weigh at least half a tonne!

24V lithium golf cart batteries are suitable for making 24 and 48-volt battery packs, decreasing the number of required connections when being compared with 12V batteries.

The actual size of 24V lithium golf cart batteries depends on their capacity:

- 24V 50-60Ah lithium golf cart batteries are mostly built as BCI Group 31 batteries,

- 24V 80-120Ah batteries are mostly built as 4D (6D) batteries,

- 24V 200+ Ah batteries mostly feature custom size - before ordering these batteries, be sure to check their actual size and the size of your battery compartment.

Note: there are many relatively new battery brands that offer 24V, 36V, and even 48V lithium deep cycle batteries that don't provide detailed documentation for their batteries. In that case, go for the tried and tested battery brands, even if that means initial higher costs and/or using more 12V batteries... Better safe than sorry...

36V lithium golf cart batteries are suitable for making 36V battery packs and, if allowed, for making 72V battery packs.

Note: 36 volts is not a voltage to play around with, and 72 volts is already a very serious voltage.

fly power 36v 100ah

The actual size of 36V lithium batteries depend on their capacity:

- 36V 40Ah batteries are mostly built as BCI Group 31 or 95R batteries,

- 36V 60-100Ah batteries are mostly built as BCI Group 4D (6D) batteries,

- 36V 120+ Ah batteries are mostly built in custom size.

As one can see, as the voltage is increased, the amount of stored energy in the same battery group remains more or less the same, but the capacity is, as expected, decreased.

48V lithium batteries are very serious batteries - most of them are designed to be used as either standalone batteries or batteries connected in parallel.

Most 48V lithium batteries are built in a non-standard size, but there are few models that are built as true lithium golf cart batteries, like ReLiON 48V 30Ah battery.

relion gc2

ReLiON 48V 30Ah battery features BCI Group GC2 size and is designed to replace GC2 lead-acid batteries in 48V battery packs - all the user has to do is to fit as many as possible (or as needed) ReLiON 48V 30Ah batteries in the battery compartment and connect them in parallel creating large 48V lithium battery pack.

Since a single ReLiON 48V 30Ah battery can provide 100A continuously and 200A for 15s, a battery pack consisting of 5 such batteries is able to provide 500 Amps continuously and 1000 Amps for 15 seconds - that is 24+ kW continuously and 48+ kW for 15 seconds from the battery pack that weighs only 172 pounds (~78 kg).

Lithium Golf Cart Batteries Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Here are the most common Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about lithium golf cart batteries and deep cycle lithium batteries in general:

Can you replace golf cart batteries with lithium batteries?

Lead-acid golf cart batteries can be replaced with lithium batteries as long as the battery packs feature the same voltage and the new battery pack features the same or larger capacity and the new battery pack is able to provide the required current.

Note: in many situations, the old lead-acid battery charger also has to be replaced with the new lithium battery charger.

How many lithium-ion batteries do I need for a golf cart?

This depends on the required battery pack - its voltage, capacity, and maximum continuous and maximum surge current that the new battery pack must have/provide.

How much does a lithium battery cost for a golf cart? How much does it cost to convert a golf cart to lithium batteries?

Initially, lithium batteries cost up to 2-3x more than lead-acid batteries. But, lithium batteries are able to withstand 8-10x more charging/discharging cycles, they can save plenty of weight, leading to more agile golf carts with increased range, load capacity, and even speed.

Also, replacing the lead-acid battery charger with the new lithium battery charger is recommended (often required!), which also increases the costs of conversion.

But, for the vehicles that are constantly in use, lithium batteries offer great savings in the long run.

Should I get a lithium battery for my golf cart?

If You need a lightweight battery pack that cycles well, then yes, You should consider switching from the lead-acid to the lithium batteries.

However, if You are satisfied with the range, speed, and load capacity of your golf cart and You don't use it practically on a daily basis, perhaps the lead-acid batteries are still a better choice for your needs.

How long will a lithium battery last in a golf cart?

Most lithium batteries come with 3-5 years limited warranties, with some brands offering up to 10 years warranties. However, such batteries must be charged using dedicated lithium battery chargers.

Few Final Words

 ampere time 48v 100ah

Deep cycle lead-acid batteries are being slowly phased out by deep cycle lithium batteries, especially for applications where battery weight, energy efficiency, number of supported charging/discharging cycles, charging speed, etc. are important.

Deep cycle lead-acid batteries are still being used, especially maintenance-free AGM and Gel-Cell batteries - they are initially cheaper, but for applications that don't require thousands of charging/discharging cycles and that don't need ultralight batteries, they are still the preferred choice.

Whatever You do, stay safe. If You are unsure about converting your lead-acid battery-powered golf cart into a lithium battery-powered vehicle, consider looking for professional help - such help is often the best and the cheapest option!
